TruGreen employee caught slacking

One lazy move cost an ex-TruGreen employee his job and his former company a large chunk of change.

In July, Weeki Wachee, Fla., homeowner Rich Kleber checked his video surveillance system to double check a trouble spot was being sprayed by a TruGreen pest control unit. He was surprised to see TruGreen employee Dean Schryer simply take one lap around the property, put a sign in the ground and leave.

“He didn’t have a backpack on, he didn’t have any chemicals in his hands, at no time did a hose come out of that truck,” Kleber told WFLA in Hernando County, Fla.

TruGreen managers at the regional office dismissed Kleber’s complaints until he showed them the video. Even then, Kleber said they called Schryer a “rogue employee,” further dismissing the situation.

Dissatisfied, Kleber posted the video to Facebook. After 20,000 views, TruGreen Corporate executives and Kleber agreed on a $935 settlement—the amount of Kleber’s long-term contract with the company.

“We want to thank Mr. Kleber for bringing this to our attention. We would never defraud our customers,” TruGreen Corporate spokeswoman Amy Simpson told WFLA.

Kleber switched to another lawn spraying company and is still waiting for his TruGreen refund. Meanwhile, Schryer is remorseful and out of a job.

“I got fired after 16 years for a job I made a mistake on,” he said.
