Intelligro touts herbicide’s Environmental Impact Quotient

Intelligro, which manufactures control products for turf under the Civitas brand, touted the Environmental Impact Quotient (EIQ) of its WEEDfree BRAND Concentrate at a press conference at GIE+EXPO in Louisville, Ky., last month.

CIVITAS WEEDfree BRAND Concentrate has a lower EIQ (6.4) compared to a traditional three-way mix selective herbicide (28.5), according to Intelligro.

The EIQ concept, developed by Cornell University, measures the positive and negative impacts of herbicide and pesticide products on the environment.

The EIQ calculator tool considers three main criteria when developing a product’s rating:

  • Worker safety: Any acute or chronic toxicity the product can cause to people;
  • Consumer friendly: Food residues, chronic toxicity and leachability to groundwater; and
  • Ecological impact: Aquatic and terrestrial nontarget toxicity (fish, bees), runoff and potential persistence.
