WASHINGTON—The Horticultural Research Institute (HRI) recently awarded several scholarships to deserving students. Founded in 1962, HRI has directed more than $5.8 million of industry funds to research projects covering the full range of production, environmental and business issues important to the Green Industry. In 2012 alone, it has distributed $282,500 in grants and scholarships.
In addition, this year the Peter Orum Family, Midwest Groundcovers and Midwest Trading Horticultural Supplies donated $250,000 to HRI to establish the Orum-Midwest Research Fund.
Recently awarded HRI scholarships include:
• Timothy S. and Palmer W. Bigelow, Jr. Scholarship (Bigelow Nurseries): $3,000 to Renee LaGue, Conway School of Landscape Design.
• Muggets Scholarship: $2,500 to Justin Menke, University of Kentucky.
• Carville M. Akehurst Memorial Scholarships (in conjunction with the Mid-Atlantic Nursery Trade Show, or MANTS): $2,000 each to Leah Comerci, West Virginia University, and Stephanie Marino, University of Maryland.
• Spring Meadow Nursery Scholarship: $2,000 to Allison Jones, Michigan State University
