Companies in the News: PBI-Gordon celebrates anniversary; Husqvarna teams up with Men Against Breast Cancer; Deere sends aid to those affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria

PBI-Gordon is celebrating its 70th anniversary this month.

Initially named Private Brands Inc. (PBI) on Oct. 8, 1947, the company was founded by John Mueller and his son Robert Mueller, John Mathias and Roy Boxmeyer. Then in 1956, PBI acquired customer and fellow Kansas City company Gordon Chemical. The combined entity changed its name to PBI-Gordon Corp. in 1970.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the company continued to expand its portfolio of private label agricultural pesticides and specialty products. PBI-Gordon became the licensee—in 1968—to combine active ingredients 2,4-D, MCPP and dicamba. This gave the company the exclusive patent rights to the formulation in the U.S.

“I have been with PBI-Gordon since 1951,” said Everett Mealman, chairman of PBI-Gordon. “Through the years, our mission to create and deliver healthier solutions through dependable products, thoughtful innovations, and impeccable service has never changed. Of course, none of this would be possible if it wasn’t for the pride our employee-owners have in their jobs, and their collective focus on delivering shared success to our customers and suppliers.”

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Husqvarna is partnering with Men Against Breast Cancer for its “Saws for a Cause” campaign. Now in its fifth year, the campaign will drive awareness and raise funds for the nonprofit and its mission as a supporting organization for men whose families are affected by breast cancer.

Consumers in the U.S. and Canada can purchase limited-edition pink toy chainsaws from Husqvarna dealers throughout the month of October. For every purchase of a pink toy chainsaw, while supplies last, Husqvarna and its partners will donate $3 (up to $15,000), to Men Against Breast Cancer. Additionally, Husqvarna is holding the 2017 Husqvarna Breast Cancer Awareness Giveaway, where one randomly selected winner will receive a limited-edition pink 450 Rancher chainsaw and limited-edition pink toy chainsaw. The giveaway entry period runs Oct. 1 through Nov. 15.

Deere & Co. will make a $1 million donation to support Habitat Hammers Back, a long-term recovery initiative organized by Habitat for Humanity International to help repair and rebuild communities affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.

“Habitat for Humanity has many years of experience helping families build back after disasters, providing longer-term, sustained efforts to help people and communities recover,” said Samuel Allen, chairman and CEO of Deere & Co. “Deere and its employees, dealers, and customers have already and will continue to be involved in these efforts.”

The $1 million commitment to Habitat Hammers Back is another step in the response by Deere and its Foundation to the hurricane disasters, including an annual $500,000 contribution by the John Deere Foundation to the American Red Cross Annual Disaster Giving Program, personal employee contributions of more than $100,000 to the Red Cross, local food banks, and other aid organizations—a total matched by the John Deere Foundation—and deployment of heavy equipment by John Deere’s business divisions and dealers to help in the recovery efforts.
