FEATURED WEED

Dandelion
Taraxacum officinale

WEED DESCRIPTION
Dandelion is a broadleaf perennial weed that is most commonly found in lawns and landscapes. Seedlings begin to emerge in early spring when soil temperatures reach 50 degrees. It is typically recognized by its solitary, bright yellow blossoms that grow on the end of leafless, hollow stalks. It produces a puffball seed head shortly after mowing, and seeds are easily dispersed by the wind.

CONTROL TIPS
For early season control, apply a postemergence herbicide containing florasulam—such as Defendor® specialty herbicide. Designed to perform in cold weather, Defendor prevents dandelion bloom and controls other spring weeds before they’re ever seen. Dandelions prefer moist conditions and soils, but thrive in weak, thin turf. Properly mow, water and fertilize turf to encourage healthy growth and minimize thin turf.

New and Improved

“What lawn care operators want for the lawn care market is a herbicide that does the job, controls the weeds and then does not hang around in the environment,” says Jamie Breuninger of Dow AgroSciences. Dow AgroSciences answered that desire with the development of two specialty postemergent herbicides expected to hit the lawn care market by fall 2018.
