Brigham Young University won the 2018 National Collegiate Landscape Competition, organized by the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP).

The event, held March 14-17 at Alamance Community College in Graham, N.C., included more than 770 students from 61 college teams and two FFA high school teams, who participated in 30 individual and team competitions. Tree climbing, hardscape installation, wood construction, plant identification, sales presentation, exterior/interior design, irrigation troubleshooting, skid-steer, 3D exterior landscape design, personnel management and small engine repair were just a few of the events.

BYU Provo took first place in the overall competitive events, receiving a check from Stihl, the platinum sponsor, for $5,000. Cal Poly Pomona took second place and Michigan State University came in third place.

The individual winners were: in first place, Marco Crosland of BYU; in second place, Tyler Gilson of Michigan State University; and in third place, Mckenna Rowles of Cuyahoga Community College. The top three students received scholarship money from the National Association of Landscape Professionals Foundation.

In addition to the competitive events, students met with recruiters from 100 companies, securing jobs and internships at the Career Fair. The Career Fair booths were once again sold out, NALP said.

Next year’s competition will be held at Colorado State University, March 20-23.
